Hi everyone! Dr. Jenn here! I wanted to share some exciting news and information that I learned last week at Transitions Academy in Orlando, Florida.
–Transitions lenses are light intelligent lenses that adapt to changing light conditions. Aka, they begin to turn dark the moment you walk outside during the day. When you walk back inside, they begin to fade back to clear. These lenses are engineered to protect your eyes from harmful UVA/UVB from the sun, and harsh artificial lighting while indoors.
-Not to be confused with Progressive lenses which are no-line bifocal lenses that allow you to see far away and up close seamlessly and without a line in your lenses.
So now that you know what they are, let’s get back to Transitions! You may have seen the commercial introducing you to a whole new portfolio of products. They are, the 4 new Transitions Style Colors, and the 6 new Transitions Style Mirrors! If you haven’t, watch below! They were the big release of new products from Transitions in 2018.

This year, I had the honor of attending Transitions Academy as a Change Agent. I was introduced to some exciting news, some great education, and of course some great hands-on experience with the products.
Day 1 started off with an in depth lecture reminding us how vision works, through light. We got in to the nitty-gritty of how the color spectrum, intensity, the source and temporality effect light. It brought me back to my Optometry school days talking about lumens! But anyways, those 4 key qualities affect how “bright” you perceive lights to be. There were some amazing statistics on the general public’s relationship with light, and how it affects their work and lifestyle. Let’s dive in to what’s coming up this year. Transitions is launching two amazing new products that will change how you see and enjoy your life outdoors and indoors.
After over a decade of research and development, Acuvue Oasys contact lenses with Transitions Light Intelligent Technology will be launching April 1st, 2019. They were recognized by TIME Magazine as one of the Best Inventions in 2018. These contact lenses will automatically darken to protect your eyes from bright sunlight as well as protect your eyes from eyestrain while indoors under fluorescent lighting and staring at digital devices.
At Transitions Academy, we had the opportunity to test the lenses and see how quickly they darken to adapt to changing light conditions! It was such an awesome experience, and I can’t wait to try these lenses out myself!
Second, Transitions will be launching their Signature Gen8 lenses. For years, the consumers voiced their concerns, and Transitions listened and has spent many years developing their newest portfolio of lenses. This whole new generation of lenses has some great new qualities that everyone can appreciate. These lenses will launch in July of 2019.
- The lenses will be fully clear indoors, no residual tint.
- The lenses will get even darker while outdoors.
- The lenses will activate/darken 30% faster, and fade back to clear 3 minutes faster.
- The lenses will block 100% of harmful UVA/UVB and harmful blue light while outdoors and indoors.
- The lenses have better performance for longer. They will continue to darken with the same intensity years later.
There were 2 key note speakers at Transitions Academy, and both were phenomenal. Day 1, Jeremy Gutsche helped us define choice and gave us strategies to make change happen. He motivated us with true stories and techniques to open our minds to opportunity. Day 2, Mel Robbins taught us a simple way to overcome our biggest fears, doubts, and how to take control of our lives.
There were so many other highlights of Transitions Academy like connecting with and meeting other like-minded eye care professionals. The Academy was revolutionary for me and I can’t wait to share more with you throughout this year as a Change Agent!
